Street Art from BsAs and NYC for Early June

This fortnightly wraps up sights from a decade and a half ago in Buenos Aires, specifically the Caballito area, before returning to Manhattan in 2019. Argentina shows off more tradition and fun, and Manhattan, being a vertical city, shows off art one never gets to see quite properly. But it’s there, high up, obstructed and caught at odd angles—just the way the city rolls. For a smaller artist, the canvas is eye-height or lower, with stickers of all sorts

The Sculptures of Caballito

Three famous Argentinians in stone overlooking the square and their fans and supporters: Carlos Gardel the tango singer, Evita the politician, Maradona the soccer star on a Balcony overlooking Caballito, saving and giving a thumbs-up the adoring crowd they imagine stands below. #BsAs #Caballito #streetart #sculpture #Evita #CarlosGardel #Maradona

Around the corner from Evita and the Caballero, one finds a woman beckoning people to enter the Cafe-Bar de los Artistas. This rounds out the most colorful corner of the Caballito neighborhood. #BsAs #Caballito #streetart #sculpture

Returning to New York and 2019

4 story mural of a face Squinting while circles fall in the background
4 story mural of a face Squinting while circles fall in the background

This four-story mural is a prime example of how height affects street art in NYC. It’s a tall city with prime walls for murals and graffiti several stories up. No matter what way you view most of these works, it’s partially obscured by buildings while simultaneously being framed by them, and the view is always at an angle. The few people to might see it flush on are those working in buildings across the street. Simply a fact of the city, and a possible selling point for a particular office—it overlooks something extra cool, and this space has a unique view. #streetart #mural #NoHo

This is part of the 100 gates Project, and attempt to use the space that is available only at night or on closed days, when a store owner pulls down the metal gate to cover his storefront. This one is by Marzipan Physics an NYC based street artist and designer with an extraterrestrial theme, full of Space Invaders, UFOs, and Stary Sunglasses. #mural #LES #LowerEastSide #streetart #Manhattan #urbanart #100gatesproject #NYC #NewYorkCity

Mural of a Heart shape filled with colorful comicbook-like images with a black back splash—as typical for NYC things get in the way.
HEKTAD Heart: Cartoon Mechanicals

A heart by Hektad, an early street artist from the Bronx. His return to the scene in 2013 shows off a new side to his art—hearts and humorous anecdotes. This is a fine sample of a heart filled with cartoon mechanical shapes on a black splatter background. A car in the foreground is typical of much NYC street art. Find him on Instagram: @hektad._official, and on the web here: World Trade Gallery. #mural #LES #LowerEastSide #streetart #Manhattan #urbanart #NYC #NewYorkCity

Simple single color painting of a yellow Cougar, bearing teeth at a red, five petal flower, shaped like a star
Cougar fighting a flower

This cougar fighting a flower along a wall is a detail from a partially blocked mural on the Lower East Side. Impossible to get a decent look at the entirety, this detail shares most of the mural’s energy. Shot from behind a metal bar, looking up at an acute angle. Near the LowlineLab. #mural #LES #LowerEastSide #streetart #Manhattan #urbanart #NYC #NewYorkCity

Mural on a bricked up entrance to who knows what covered with comic book Thought, exlaimation and speach ballons about life, death and highheels (Plus emojis)

This mural takes advantage of a bricked-up entrance to who knows what it was, covering the brick blight with comic book thought, exclamation and speech balloons, pictorially having a conversation about life, death, and high heels (plus emojis). Tombob is an NYC street artist specializing in transforming otherwise discarded parts of the city into objects of art. Well, if not art, then thought and commentary, while making fun to look at.

Mural of a shady looking guy, pulling the color of his coat up, with his hat pulled down, behind the NYC Skyline on a field of reddish orange.
The Shady Dude Behind the City

Another example of the vertical nature of street art in NYC, this time a six-foot-tall mural several stories up on the side of a building: A Shady Dude, pulling up his coat collar, standing behind the City with what looks like a spray can in his right hand, seemingly controlling things from afar. Again the surfaces of surrounding buildings provide framing. #mural #LES #LowerEastSide #streetart #Manhattan #urbanart #NYC #NewYorkCity

Sticker of a cross-eyes goofy troll with tongue out and 18th century hair (or GIANT eyebrows)

Stickers are a cheap way of joining into the conversation of street art. Some are hand drawn, or they are created digitally, and then printed up enmas to spread around the city, such as this cross-eyed goofy troll—he’s here to liven up a bar spot on a wall, door, box or pole. Less vandalizing than painting, so safer and faster. More stickers of all sorts to come. #sticker #ChinaTown #streetart #Manhattan #urbanart #NYC #NewYorkCity
